Riviera Maya Road Trip in 5 Days: Beaches, Cenotes and Cobá by Kombi
In five days you can enjoy the best of the Riviera Maya by Kombi without leaving Quintana Roo: beach nights near Tulum, snorkeling in Akumal, a string of cenotes and a sunset night in Cobá. Distances are short, so you spend more time swimming than driving.

Five days is the sweet spot for a first Kombi trip. It’s long enough to settle into the rhythm of the road (wake up by the sea, swim, drive a little, cook, watch the sunset) and short enough to fit into a holiday that also includes a few nights in town. This route stays entirely in Quintana Roo, our driving zone, so there’s nothing to arrange beyond picking up the keys.
How the trip works
- Pick-up at 14:00 in Tulum Centro, five blocks from the ADO terminal. If you’re coming from Cancún, the ADO bus takes about 2 hours.
- Martin walks you through the Kombi: manual gearbox, pop-up roof, gas stove, cooler and solar shower. You also get his route book.
- Return at 12:00 on day 5 (late return until 20:00 available).
- The Kombi cruises at up to 70 km/h. On this route that’s never a problem: most stages are well under an hour.
New to the area? Our page on how it works explains everything from license to fuel.
Day 1: Settle in at Bahía Solimán
After the handover, stock up in town and drive about 20 minutes north to Chamicos in Bahía Solimán. Park facing the sea, open the roof and cook your first dinner in the van. Arriving early on day one is the best decision you can make: you learn the van in daylight and start the trip relaxed.
Day 2: Akumal, Yal-Ku and a beach night
Drive to Akumal and snorkel at Yal-Ku, where the lagoon meets the sea. Spend the afternoon at La Buena Vida or simply on the sand, then continue a few minutes to Xpu-Ha, around 35 km from Tulum, for the night. If you’re curious about the sea turtles of Akumal, enjoy them from a respectful distance and follow local guidance.
Day 3: A cenote day
Today is all about fresh water. Choose two or three from Martin’s list and keep the driving minimal:
- Casa Cenote, a mangrove-fringed cenote close to the sea.
- Dos Osos and Aktun Chen, for underground swimming and caves.
- Calavera, small and fun, close to Tulum.
Spend the night at Paa Mul, another coastal spot that past Kombi travelers have used. For more ideas, see our guide on where to sleep in a campervan in the Riviera Maya.
Day 4: Cobá, ruins and a jungle sunset
Head inland to Cobá. Explore the archaeological site in the afternoon, when the light softens, and stay for sunset. Sleeping in Cobá is a completely different mood from the coast: quieter, greener and full of night sounds.
Day 5: Back to Tulum, slowly
On the way back, stop for a swim at Cenote Cristal or Cenote Escondido on the Chetumal road, about 3 km from town, or at the Kaan Luum lagoon if you have time. Fill the tank with Magna and drop the Kombi off in Tulum.
Practical tips
- No A/C, so plan around the heat. Drive in the morning or late afternoon and keep the middle of the day for swimming.
- No bathroom on board. Campsites with bathrooms and electricity make the trip much more comfortable.
- Bring cash and a reusable water bottle. Many small places work better that way.
- Check the beach conditions. If sargassum arrives, use our plan B inland route.
Want more days?
If you can stretch the trip, the 7-day Yucatán road trip adds Valladolid and Chichén Itzá (just tell us first, as they’re in Yucatán state). Either way, check availability and prices and write to Martin: he’ll help you choose the right Kombi and the right route.
Frequently asked questions
Is five days enough for the Riviera Maya by campervan?
Yes. Staying in Quintana Roo keeps the stages short, which suits a Kombi that cruises at up to 70 km/h. You get beaches, cenotes and ruins without long driving days.
Do I need to book campsites in advance?
It's a good idea in high season. Martin's route book lists the spots travelers use, and he can help you plan each night when you pick up the van.
Can I return the Kombi later on the last day?
Standard return is at 12:00, and a late return until 20:00 can be arranged. Ask when you book so you can plan one last swim.
